To hear first-hand from Christine what green business practices State Farm has adopted, be sure to attend the Lehigh Valley Green Business League Kickoff Event on Wed. Sept. 30th at the Allentown Brew Works in the High Gravity Room at 7 PM. See LVGBL.com for details or to RSVP.

Simply put, upcycling is a term used to describe the process of making something useful from waste. Pencil cases made from Capri Sun drink pouches, folders from used Frito Lay chip bags, purses from inside-out soccer balls, business card holders from old vinyl records, chairs from cardboard, and the list goes on. Unique items such as these are beginning to establish themselves in the marketplace, so why not take this concept and run with it here in the Lehigh Valley to create some new jobs?

For inspiration, take some time to read the book titled “Revolution in a Bottle – The TerraCycle Story” by Tom Szaky. In the book, Szaky describes how it is often more cost effective to reuse waste that is otherwise too difficult and costly to recycle. TerraCycle has established product brigades that pay consumers to collect things like yogurt cups, candy wrappers and wine corks. They pay a few cents per item to a charity or school of your choice and then they use the collected waste items to make or package their products.

We live in a densely populated area. We generate a tremendous amount of waste. Why not tap into the amazing creativity of our students and community members to create some innovative upcycled products? With a few forward-thinking investors and continued demand for these new products, the Lehigh Valley could become home to a manufacturing plant supplying some exciting green jobs.

Participating in upcycling programs not only helps raise money for your school or favorite non-profit organization, but it’s also another way to earn points towards your Green Business Certification.

What’s a Green Business?
Green businesses operate in ways that solve, rather than cause, both environmental and social problems. These businesses adopt principles, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life for their customers, their employees, communities, and the environment.

What’s a Green Business?
Green businesses operate in ways that solve, rather than cause, both environmental and social problems. These businesses adopt principles, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life for their customers, their employees, communities, and the environment. Let’s make our great community one of our nation’s leaders!!!

What are some of the characteristics of Green Businesses?
Using business as a tool for social change. “Values-driven,” not simply profit-driven. Socially and environmentally responsible in the way they source, manufacture, market their products, and run their offices. Committed to and employing extraordinary and innovative practices that benefit workers, communities, customers, and the environment.

Can’t we do this on our own?
Absolutely, but we can get you there quicker and more efficiently, all while saving you money in the long run. As city, state and federal regulations grow, how do you stay ahead of these ever-increasing regulations and mandates? Oddly, no one really seems to have the answers although they constantly pressure businesses to Go Green.

What does earning Green Business Certification mean?
Earning your Green Business Certified status is the first of many advantages with our system. Local and national identification as a Green Business is something that will add to your credibility at every level. This is not a “Buy a Membership” program. You will earn it, and it will have the kind of substance that demands respect.

How much will this cost me?
Each company and situation is unique but we pride ourselves on being affordable and practical for businesses of all sizes and needs. We’re here to make this affordable, fun and beneficial for your business and community. How many times can you say that in business these days?

Can we learn from what other companies are doing to go green?
Our program allows for quarterly meetings that provide Green Business Training, and a chance to meet and socialize with other Green Businesses. Green programs have often been anti-business; but without a partnership with the business community, no Green Program can succeed. We work on integrating quality information to area businesses and forming a superior network of business leaders.

What about the products my business currently uses?
The industry buzz is about the importance of the Green Supply Chain, which puts a serious emphasis on what products your company buys and what services it employs. Unless these companies are Green Business certified, their claims for Green may be little more than “Greenwashing” and hype. Is your janitorial service Green certified? Do other firms supplying yours recycle? Do they have a Green purchasing protocol? What are they doing to work with sustainable resources? Are they wastefully using paper products? In the end, all these things matter.

Undoubtedly, you have already seen a few websites that will list you as a Green Business for a few hundred dollars and a promise to follow their generalized Ten Green Principles. These are scams that are a disservice to the need for serious action by businesses everywhere.

Businesses use 39% of our energy consumption, which includes 71% of the electricity. They emit 39% of the C02 gases, and produce over 30% of the waste into landfills. They also use 12% of the potable water and 30% of all raw products.

It doesn’t matter if you rent, lease or own your facility. Changes in the operation of a company are intensely important. We offer a step-by-step guide to affordable changes applicable to any business. If you earn 100 points by voluntary changes in your operation, you will actually “Earn, not Buy” your Green Business Certification.
